as always, i think i did ok for the essay but i think my AQ sucked. omg anqi! ask ur parents how to do AQ can? ha. anyway, chose what some people call an esoteric question.. but i dun think it was tt esoteric. ha. it was "Unity in diversity." Can it ever be achieved?
Unity in diversity is a a socio-ecological philosophy that describes a sense of oneness despite
physical or psychological barriers.
The phrase is widely used to describe
India, which is home to a multi-ethnic, multi-lingual and multi-religious
society. The subcontinent's long and diverse history has given it a unique
eclectic culture that is often associated with spirituality. India's diversity
forces it to either evolve strong foundations of tolerance and survive, or face
break-up. Such a situation has forced Indian society to foster a sense of unity
in diversity........
- Wikipedia.
i guess i got the part about multi religious and multi ethnic parts and included something about women too. dun ask me how. cuz i am gonna tell you. pls dun be offended about what i have posted. its based mostly on events in history and facts of today.
intro was about globalisation and how we are no longer defined by borders of our country due to migration and wadever. then said something about agreeing it is achievable to a certain extent but from time to time there will be radicals who will want to disrupt the peace that the people have fought so hard for. but nevertheless, its is still possible.
then first point was about SINGAPORE. like duh. multi ethnic society, a melting pot of cultures, said smth about how our geographical location along the important China-India trade route have created a multi racial society, mentioned about the racial riots and how the government ensures this peace is maintained - libel laws - the bloggers thing, Newspaper and Presses Act and something else i cant recall.
then went on to how unity among the sexes have led to greater economic prosperity and alternative view points provided by the fairer sex. used examples of Ho Ching, Hilary Rodham Clinton and Indira Gandhi. the diversity has caused us to be united as only through accepting this diversity can we progress. ok it wasn't as elegantly phrased as this.
then the anti-thesis part. started off with how radicals cause disharmony and sow discord, making out differences even more distinct. and Hitler came into the picture. how the genocide killed millions of Jews till today the Jewish population hasn't recovered to pre-holocaust numbers. Jews were sent to concentration camps like Auschwitz where most were sent to gas chambers. and also about how Hitler viewed the the Aryan race as superior. - thank god i took history.
next was the South African Apartheid, which i spelt as ApartheLd. HA! anyway, leave you to read up on it on yourself but its about colonial superiority and how the Sherpeville Massacre caused global awareness of the plight of the blacks in SA. nt SAJC. SOUTH AFRICA. and how they boycotted the SA products to place pressure on the SA government to reform. continued with the oppression of the blacks in the states. about how it was ironic that it was the land of freedom and yet there is some level of discrimination although it is not clearly shown. and some examples such as the Rosa Parks thing and how the blacks got beaten up by the supposed law enforcers. (based solely on reports i read. may be a thing of the past but it indeed did happen so pls dun be offended.)
and finally, (sadly i had not enough time to write more) the IRA.. northern Ireland all tt SS stuff. Bloody Sunday and all these.
yup then concluded by saying there is hope for the human race as the incidents and severity of such discrimination is becoming less. human nature to always spot the difference between ourselves and thsoe around us but its up to us to accept the fact taht these differences are part of human social interactions and we must learn to live with it. then ended with, "We all belong to a race - the human race." HA. i think i saw tt from a compre passage.
OMG AQ SUCKED! the question was about whether we agree to the passages with state we should have limits. but elements in the passage offered alternative view points and i sorta jumbled all the points up so the entire AQ is not organised. damn. hope the marker doesn't notice this cuz i tried to make it as inconspicuous as possible. but still managed to insert examples on how we need limits: like the rate of rainforest destruction and no of animal species going extinct and related to Singapore through sungei buloh, destruction of our forests, and pollution of our waters.
on the we should not limit side/ not remain stagnant, i mentioned about our small size and competition with china and the need to diversify. how it would lead to economic growth put in inflation and unN rates for 06. how we are the third most largest receiver of FDI in Asia and that the US invests in Singapore 3 times than what it invests in China. the IRs and how we are shifting out comparative advantage. HAHA! and also how our laissez-faire economic policies are changing to adapt to the need to constantly change and exceed out limits. of course had to mention about the fact that had our leaders' have low expectations and limited foresight, we would not be where we are today. and the 6.5 million peeps which seems unbelievable but necessary to increase our competitiveness although our island has a limit to its maximum carrying capacity. but we will find ways to overcome this problem.
